In 1999, Dr. Bishop entered his ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He was the first Navy ophthalmology resident in 20 years to participate in a humanitarian mission, performing cataract surgeries in Indonesia, followed by additional missions throughout the Pacific in 2006 aboard the Navys hospital ship, USNS Mercy, and to Burkina Faso, West Africa in 2008. In 2002, he became Head of Vision Services at the Naval Hospital, Guam, later returning to NMCSD in 2004. In 2012, Captain Bishop was honored with selection as Chairman of the NMCSD Ophthalmology Department. In 2015, Captain Bishop was appointed Specialty Advisor for Ophthalmology by the Surgeon General, United States Navy. This was followed in 2017 by his selection as the Director of Surgical Services at NMCSD, where he led nearly 1,000 active duty and civilian personnel.
